I love working with our students in reading and writing. My passion for children and teaching Reading/ Language Arts connects me to the teaching of Literacy!

I have a B.A. in Special Education/Elementary Education and taught in a Resource Room and Self-Contained classroom with children of various needs. My Master degree is in Reading as a Reading and Language Arts Consultant (097). I received a certificate in Reading Recovery from the University of Connecticut and have graduated with a Sixth Year degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (092) from Southern Connecticut State University.

As an Educator and Reading and Language Arts Consultant for 20  years in a variety of school districts and love working with the Watertown students, parents, staff, and administration as the Systemwide Reading and Language Arts Coordinator K-12.

My husband, Roger and I love to travel, write, read,go to the theater, and especially love to go on long walks with our Mini Pincher, Charlie.

My three girls are all grown up and have successful jobs within their field.

 Remedial Reading

The Remedial Reading teachers use the Storytown intervention program called Strategic Intervention that mirrors the classroom's lessons and stories. Each story allows the students to read text at their "Just Right" level (approximately 6 mo.-1yr below grade level) while being instructed in Phonemic Awarenes, Phonics, Vocabulary, High Frequency Words, and Comprehenison skills/strategies they are working on within their classroom. High Frequency words and vocabulary words are "front loaded" (pre-taught) to the students so that they are familar with the words and skills beforethe students are taught them in their classroom. They feel a bit more confident and are able to participate easier with their classmates.

 Grade One:

Strategic Intervention small group lesson:

Shooting Stars (2nd Book)

The students are re-reading the text for fluency while pointing and matching the text, thinking what will match and make sense, and fixing up any "tricky words" by going back and rereading to self-correct the mismatches.

Students are using Elkonian Sound Boxes as they practice a Phonics skill of saying the word, hearing the letter sounds within the word, and pushing the letter sounds they hearing into the boxes.

For example: Cat has three sounds     C    a    t

Early Intervention is the Key !

Remedial Reading is a regular education support service within our District.

Teachers/Parents may recommend students for additional Remedial testing or last year's assessments may have shown us that some of our students may benefit from some further assessments to determine if the child needs extra support services from the Remedial Reading Teacher.

In the Fall and during the year, I begin to take a closer look at some students  who may need extra literacy support.

I use a variety of assessments  that demonstrate the child's literacy strategies and skills. Some of the assessments I use include:

Gates (Gr.1&2),Metropolitan Reading Test (K), Metropolitan Reading Achievement Test 8(Gr.1&2 ), Observation Survey by Marie Clay, and  District Curriculum based assessments (K-2)shared by the classroom teacher.

As a Team , (Classroom teacher, parent, and Reading teacher) we share results and decided what literacy plan will be best for that child.

Students who may need extra assistance with their reading, work with me in small group or one-to-one using a variety of Reading  strategies. I Co-teach within the classroom and pull-out students to work with me in the Reading Room.

 Early Reading Strategies:

   2. Check the Pictures to see what word would make sence.

 3. Get your mouth ready to say the first letter sounds of the word.

 4. Think what word makes sense, sounds right, and looks right in the sentence.
   5. Go back and reread the sentence again....does it make sense?

During Reading

2. Use big parts of the word (Chunks) to decode a tricky word

3. Reread the sentence to make sure the tricky word looks right, sounds right, and makes sense in the  sentence.

4.  Stop and Think  to make sure they remember what was read and everything makes sense.

5.  Make a connection to the story... (the character reminds of a friend of theirs when....)

After Reading

6. Stop and sketch about what was read....

7. Discuss a favorite part of the story with a partner
