SPEECH AND LANGUAGE IN THE PRESCHOOL
Every month, the preschool children experience various language learning activities based on familiar and seasonal themes. The purpose of the activities is to encourage vocabulary/concept aquisition and receptive/expressive language development as well as exposing the children to rhyming, social skills and learning pretend play skills. All themes are introduced with stories and picture books. The last week of every month, there is a puppet show based on a story and vocabulary enriching activites for all the children to participate in.
During the months of March and April, we will be busy planning and actually having a Birthday Party for Big Bear!
What stories will we listen to?
Corduroy's Birthday, by Don Freeman
Ask Mr. Bear, by Marjorie Flack
Happy Birthday Moon, by Frank Asch
We will learn the vocabulary associated with birthdays by making invitations, birthday cards and pinatas, having a wrapping station in each of the classrooms, making a cake, setting the table with all the partyware and decorating the party room. We will also practice formulating sentences with -ing and regualr past tense verbs, plurals, possessive 's and approrpriate pronouns (he/she/his hers).
We will be highlighting the following concepts: on, on top, all, and counting to five. When we make the invitations, we will be able to target asking and answering questions.
The Social Skill targeted this month will be feelings. The preschool children will participate in an interactive story called Can You Tell How Someone Feels? They will learn to how to identify different feelings.
The Nursery Ryhme highlighted this month is Humpty Dumpty. The children will be able to act out the nursery rhyme with their friends.
