        March 2010

Color for the month of March is GREEN

Shape for the month is a rectangle

Dramatic Play Area-- The dramatic play area has been transformed into a "Birthday Party Center" where children can have a birthday party or two everyday of the week.

Block Area--Tools have been added to the block area and the children have been building, repairing and demolishing at a furious rate.  The jungle animals have been replaced by dinosaurs.  A puppet theater and puppets have also been added as well as a variety of floor puzzles and a lego train with train tracks.

Discovery Table--students can try their hand at matching the beginning sound of an item with the alphabet train using their knowledge of sound/letter association.

      We have also been....

              labeling opposites (big/small; long/short; empty/full; bottom/top......)

counting to 15 while looking at the numerals

learning about "healthy" and "unhealthy" food choices

Miss Patty and Miss Lynn presented a lesson with puppet friends named Dot and Scott.  The students helped Dot learn about things that are HOT.

      February 2010

      Color for the month---pink

      Shape for the month---heart

February is a very busy month in the classroom….

We learned about and celebrated Chinese New Year.

       The children learned that…

      ·        the color red symbolized good luck

      ·        people clean their house to get ready for the New Year

      ·        2010 is the year of the tiger

      ·        Families have a banquet or “big feast”

      ·        There is a dragon parade (we also learned a song)

Dramatic Play--- Post Office/Valentine Center—the students have been exploring a variety of materials as they make Valentine cards for friends and family.  There are mailboxes in the post office for each child so that the mail can be “delivered”.

Sensory Table---The sensory table is now filled with “snow” or really shredded paper (no need for mittens).  Within the shredded paper are hidden numbers on various shapes that the students find and then find the matching number or number of objects on a felt board.  The children have also been enjoying some pink gak this month.  The sand table is also available.

Climbing Area---An additional wooden box was added to the climbing area so that we could raise the slide.  The children have been crossing the bridge and then sliding down the slide during a variety of play scenarios. This week the children have had a chocolate factory with the cardboard blocks being bars of chocolate that move up and down the slide during production.

Discovery Table---Students have the opportunity to sort foods on to either a “happy” or a “sad” tooth.  February is Dental Hygiene month and we have spent time learning how to take care of our teeth, what happens when you visit the dentist, and what foods help make our teeth strong. There are also snowman magnets that have clothes and items to dress them up.

We enjoyed Weekly Readers that helped us learn about tigers, dental hygiene and President’s Day.

Ms. Patty and Ms. Lynn, our Speech/Language therapists, have been visiting each week to present a lesson/activity about rhyming.  A bear names Pete came this week and the children helped him “eat” and stay “neat”.

The students participated in an experiment where they observed

the effects of colored salt water on ice.

      January 2010

      Happy New Year!!!!!

      Color for the month---white

      Shape for the month---circle

The New Year has started out with a “flurry” of activity in the classroom.  Changes took place all over the classroom…

Dramatic Play--- Sandwich Shop-- The students are enjoying making sandwiches, ordering, taking orders and being the cashier.  Picture cues are available for students if needed to help them sequence the steps in making a sandwich and then putting the order together.  We are very accommodating and make sandwiches with a variety of condiments.

Sensory Table---The sensory table is now filled with “snow” or really shredded paper (no need for mittens).  Within the shredded paper are hidden numbers on various shapes that the students find and then find the matching number or number of objects on a felt board.  If your child comes home with paper sticking to their shirt or sweater you now can figure out that they have been playing in the “snow”.

Climbing Area---We have been studying about penguins so 2 of our large boxes have become icebergs with a bridge between them.  Under the bridge is a blue mat that represents water so that the classroom penguins can jump into the water and swim around to find their food.

Discovery Table---students have the opportunity to match gingerbread cutouts and mitten cut outs that are the same to find a “pair”.  There are also alphabet strips that allow children to match letters or match upper and lower case letters.

We have been learning about snow, winter clothing, and winter activities. Key vocabulary includes: hat, mittens, gloves, scarf, coat, jacket, boots, snowman, sled, and skate.

We have also been learning about penguins.  We have learned…

      ·        Penguins can not fly

      ·        Penguins eat fish, krill, squid and shrimp

      ·        The largest penguin is an Emperor penguin

      ·        The smallest penguin is a Little Blue or also called a Fairy penguin

      ·        The daddy penguin holds the egg on his feet for up to 9 weeks while he waits for he egg to hatch

We have also been working on answering questions at Circle Time.  The question we have been focusing on is "Where do you live?"  The answer can be "Watertown", "Oakville" or a street address.

I will be  introducing the students to some basic sign language during the course of the year.  As new signs are introduced I will add them to the list below.
