Classroom News

Our classroom is a busy place! Take a look.

 Reading and Language

Lesson 13 focuses on digraphs /ch/ ch, tch, sequencing the event in a story or nonfiction text. We will read about a boy who wants to grow up, in addition to reading about the stages of growth in the lifecycle of a butterfly.

Lesson 14 focuses on an r-controlled vowel: ar, author's purpose, point of view, and summarizing. We will be reading stories about characters who star in a play, as well as what is involved in putting on a play.

Lesson 15 will focus on digraphs /kw/ qu, and /wh/ wh, and sequencing the parts of a story to improve comprehension. Students will read stories about people who worked hard to achieve something. In writing, the students will practice writing personal narratives.

The students have also been working cooperatively in small group literacy centers regularly. We currently have five centers: Guided Reading with the teacher, Partner Reading, Word Work, Independent Reading, and Writing.

Please watch for the School-Home Connection sheet that provides more information about the current lesson, as well as ideas for reinforcing skills at home.

 Math

Math - In January, we will begin Chapter 7 - Counting to 100. We'll be doing much more than counting though. We'll also be busy reading, writing, comparing, and ordering numbers to 100. Skip counting by 10's, 5's, and 2's will also be practiced, along with place value, estimation, odd, even, and ordinal numbers.

Parents-Please reinforce addition and subtraction skills by doing everyday math at home. Use real life situations to practice adding and subtracting.  This can be done while setting the table, preparing meals, grocery shopping, etc. Practicing math facts with you in this manner will make learning much more meaningful and enjoyable.

Chapter 4 Vocabulary: counting back,

related facts: 4+3=7 and 7-4=3,

fact family:4+5=9, 5+4=9, 9-5=4, 9-4=5

Chapter 3 Vocabulary: count on, number line, doubles

Chapter 2 Vocabulary:  add, plus, equals, sum, subtract, minus, difference

Chapter 1 Vocabulary: pattern, more, fewer, less, greater, least, between, greatest

Social Studies

We'll be reading many biographies this month, including some on Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

Some recent lessons on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. reminded all of us about his message of kindness, peace, and fairness. We'll continue reading about him and other influential African Americans, such as Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks, during Black History month in February.

*Please be sure your child knows his/her full name, address, phone number, and birthday.
